What is Service Design?

Service Design continues to be a relatively new and emerging field within the design industry. So many people are unsure what precisely service design is and the way it helps their business and their customers.  To put it differently, service design is planning, organizing and improvement of a service. Service deign is not just about fixing the existing services of an organizations, it’s also used to provide new and innovative approaches to fill unmet customers need.

A service is an experience offered to customers. It is intangible and comes into existence only on delivery. Services are difficult to standardize since they are an experience created and consumed by individuals at different points in time.  As a result of this changing nature of services, service design is important to make sure customer care.

Service design looks at the customer experience, analyzing the points of interaction between the service provider and the customer and working on approaches to improve the components. These ingredients can vary widely according to the specific service being analyzed. They could be, but are not limited by communication, verbal and written, office layout, technologies, products, advertising, packaging and invoices.

Service design asks important fundamental questions such as : What is the service being provided? How are buyers reaching the supplier? Which stakeholders are participating? Is the buyer pleased with the service? And can the service be improved? These are questions every business should be asking because in a competitive industry frequently it’s simply a matter of service which ensures you keep customers returning.

Service design isn’t only about the front office or customer satisfaction staff. It may involve evaluating practices which customers rarely see. For example, an office might use service design to boost the processing of written requests. Although customer is just not present for the interaction, the speedy processing of requests has an effect on the customer’s experience of service with the company.

Company websites, blogs, and social networking profiles may also reap the benefits of using service design. Accessibility, usability, and relevant content are issues in connection with service design and customer experience.

When assessing specific services design tools for instance video-ethnography and shadowing, are utilized to produce a visual ‘map’ of the nature, communication, and characteristics involved. To put it differently, practitioners try to answer the ‘who, what, when, why and how’ of the service interaction by watching customers and recreating it with pictures and visual aids.

Service design makes use of tools from various disciplines and schools of thought, along with classical business techniques. The idea is to put the client and the customer’s needs in centre of the service process.
